National Rebuilding Day tackles Spokane
Volunteers across the country and in Spokane are picking up hammers and paint brushes to fix up homes for National Rebuilding Day.
In Hillyard, volunteers have been working hard on Willa Natarajan's home. "We focus on issues of warmth, safety, and independence and help make it accessible for her," said Cody Moore with Rebuilding Together Spokane. Volunteers put a fresh coat of paint on Willa's home, landscaped her front and back yard, and had a professional cleaner tackle the inside. "This is unbelievable," said Natarajan. "I keep thinking I should pinch myself to make sure it's really happening."Natarajan is 66-years-old and suffers from fibromyalgia, diabetes, and narcolepsy, making it difficult for her to maintain her home. Despite her disabilities, Natarajan helps out in the community by teaching English and providing foster care for 64 kids over the past couple of years. When all the work is done, Natarajan's home will be like new, but it's what you can't see she'll treasure forever. "I guess the memories," said Natarajan. "That they cared enough to do this."On Saturday morning, volunteers will move on to eight other homes, two non-profit organizations, and a community garden in need of repair in Hillyard.
