SPOKANE, Wash. -

Heavy rain Sunday night and early Monday morning, combined with warmer temperatures and melting snow, has led to minor flooding in some areas of the Inland Northwest.

In Spokane more than a half an inch of rain was reported while on the Palouse nearly three quarters of rain fell. But there were only a few spots around the area that attracted a good deal of runoff.

In Rathdrum more than two inches of rain have been reported, which led to some flooding north of Twin Lakes on Highway 41.

"When I showed up this morning there was probably two and a half feet of water," Marc Johnson with the Idaho Department of Transportation said.

IDOT started pumping rain water out of a depression along Highway 41 around 7:30 Sunday evening. The rain was falling so hard that the pumps were having a hard time keeping up with the rain water, leading to a quick forming pond that caught more than two dozen drivers by surprise, leading to a handful of stalled engines.

"Usually when the ground is frozen is when we have the most problems 'cause the water can't go into the ground anywhere," Johnson explained.

Another problem area was Prairie View at old Highway 195 where street crews closed down the intersection. As for the City of Spokane, there haven't been any drainage problems reported yet. Part of the reason for that is the city was able to finish a complete leaf pickup before the first snowfall.

The National Weather Service in Spokane issued a small stream flood advisory in Whitman County for poorly drained areas. That advisory lasts until Tuesday morning.

For now, drivers in areas where there is minor flooding possible just have to remember to be careful and take it slow.
