ELK, Wash. -

More windy weather Monday left another home destroyed by a falling tree, this time a family near Elk had their mobile home cut in half when a limb from a nearby Ponderosa sliced through their home.

The same thing happened on the South Hill last Friday when a limb tore away from its trunk and crushed the roof on a daylight rancher.

On Monday a family was sitting inside their mobile home in Elk when one of two twin tops of a nearby Ponderosa Pine broke off in high winds and sliced their home in half.

"We got a call that a tree had fallen on a mobile home and there were some trapped victims at first. They had gotten themselves out of the mobile home before we arrived," Battalion Captain Vince Steziale with Spokane County Fire District #4 said.

The 18-inch diameter limb tore away from the trunk during a snow squall.

An 18-year-old resident was hit by falling debris and had to be taken to the hospital

As trees in our yards get older odd growth patterns make them more and more susceptible to winter storms. If one in your yard is close enough to fall in your house you need a visit from an arborist; you can get a list of certified arborists from Spokane's urban forester at city hall.
