Bandel to remain in jail before child porn trial
A North Idaho man charged with possessing child pornography will not be let out of jail as he awaits trial after a federal judge in Boise ruled Monday that Bruce Bandel poses too great a risk to society and should be kept in jail.
Federal agents laid out their case against Bruce Bandel during a detention hearing Monday. The child porn charges stem from a traffic stop in Illinois last year. Troopers found more than 100 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle and alerted authorities in North Idaho. When police searched his travel trailer they found a safe containing images of child pornography and called in the FBI.
Much of the evidence is sealed in U.S. District Court but during Monday's hearing FBI Special Agent Michael Gneckow told the judge what they uncovered in Bandel's trailer. Agent Gneckow told the judge they found 45 printed pages of child pornography as well as videotapes containing young girls engaging in sexual acts with adult men.
They also found video they say was taken at the Red River Hot Springs near Grangeville, Idaho. Bandel is the former owner of the resort and according to agents the video was shot from a second story window and shows young girls in their bathing suits with the camera zooming into their private areas.
In court Monday FBI agents also said they have identified one of the young girls shown in the video as a relative of Bandel's and is depicted in her underwear in provocative poses. Agents say the videos were taken on two separate occasions and were shot inside the same trailer searched by the FBI.
Bandel is in the Bonner County Jail. His trial is set for June 6, 2010.
