SPOKANE, Wash. -- Lawmakers in Olympia will soon be considering an initiative allowing anyone more than 21 years old to buy and smoke marijuana without the fear of getting arrested. On Friday, Washington's Secretary of State, Sam Reed, announced I-502 has enough valid signatures to move into the state House and Senate for consideration.I-502 would put the state in the marijuana business by licensing and regulating the drug. According to New Approach Washington, a non-profit behind the measure, I-502 would also allow anyone more than 21 years old to purchase a limited amount of marijuana at licensed stores.Under the I-502, marijuana could not be consumed or opened in public.
According to supporters, the initiative, if passed, could generate more than $200 million in new state revenue."I think it's a person's right to use what they want to put in [his/her] own body," said Darren McCrea with Spocannabis.McCrea uses medical marijuana to alleviate the pain of rheumatoid arthritis. He said he appreciates the effort to make marijuana mainstream, but fears state-run dispensaries could make his medicine more expensive.McCrea is confident the initiative will eventually be a law; however, he believes that's only half the battle."This is still a federal issue," he said.Under federal law it's still illegal to use, buy and sell marijuana.According to New Approach Washington, the state is free to try a new approach to marijuana laws.
