AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. -- Two women who attempted to escape from Geiger Corrections Center Tuesday night ended up back in custody an hour later and facing a lot more jail time as a result of their flight to freedom.Geiger inmates Rachel Banks and Kathleen Stockton first shattered the window of their housing unit, crawling over broken glass and a metal grate, then used a blanket to climb over the razor wire at the West Plains holding facility. They were hoping that blanket would keep them from getting cut by the razor wire but it ended up not giving them much protection, with both suffering multiple lacerations.
"It appears they used a blanket and went over the razor wire of the fence. They did receive several lacerations and cuts, some of which were not attended to could have been life threatening," Spokane County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Gregory said.Banks also broke her ankle in the jailbreak, so Stockton walked to a nearby trailer park to get them both a ride out of the area. She went to one residence but was turned away by the people that lived there."They went knocking on doors asking for help and when they asked what happened because of the blood, they said they had scaled the Geiger fence," Deputy Gregory said. That's when residents called 9-1-1 and after that deputies had little trouble tracking the women by the blood they left behind in the snow."During that time they also found a male and female who had given them clothing and were also planning to give a ride to them to help get them out of the area," Gregory said. For Banks, this jailbreak attempt wasn’t the first time she was hurt trying to stay out of jail. Last August, while driving a stolen Honda while fleeing pursuing Spokane police officers, she wrapped the car around a telephone pole, suffering numerous injuries, including a broken neck. She recovered from her injuries but continued to steal cars.Officer Glenn Bartlett arrested Banks in October and she had remained in custody until Tuesday night when she escaped custody for an hour."She does not want to be in jail. She's been hurt running from us before. It does not surprise me that she's hurt herself again trying to escape," Bartlett said.Banks has done more to herself than just get hurt. This escape attempt doubled her bail to $50,000 while breaking out of jail just doubled hers and Stockton's original sentences.
