SPOKANE -- There's a buzz going around town about the "Swring", a the three decades old invention designed by lifelong inventor Emory Clark that is having a profound effect on kids with autism. It’s also having a profound effect on local clinics, with a number of them around Spokane having snatched up the unique ringed swing.Inspired back in the 1970's by a friend's homemade climbing rings, Emory put a spin on it with a curious looking toy with a newly discovered powerful impact on children with autism.
“Kids began to really not just enjoy it, but she could see definite progress in some of the children's behavior and their ability to be involved in a social setting with other kids," Emory, who is also a grandfather to 11 kids, said. The Swring, he says, brings out smiles and joy to autistic kids who normally struggle with the ability to show emotion. At Pig Out In The Park this weekend kids approached with curiosity and a little nervousness, but once aboard it was a completely different story which you could see from the smiles on their faces.“My goal is to see this on every continent,” Emory said. “I'd like to see this in Australia and Europe and Asia … I'd like to see it in North Korea!"The Swring is something you have to try to get the full effect and Emory Clark says he’d be happy to have you come out take the Swring for a spin when he’s out at the Spokane County Fair later this month.
