SPOKANE -- If you have arachnophobia we've got some bad news. It's spider season across the Inland Northwest and this year is particularly bad. The main culprit is Hobo Spiders. One local exterminator said that in the last two weeks spider calls are up 200-percent. Another exterminator said it’s the most active spider season he can remember in 25 years on the job while at Northwest Seed and Pet spray and traps are being snapped up by customers.Judith Feeley is the assistant manager of Northwest Seed and Pet and knows all too well the threat Hobo Spiders pose to to people.
“I found two in my bath tub the other day,” she said. She says that every day people bring in spiders in to be identified. In the last two weeks customers have brought in approximately 50 Hobo Spiders.“They're saying, what is this? And they’re going Oh my God we have them here?” Judith said.“We didn’t have much of a winter last year so most things wintered through that we normally get reprieve from when we get freezing,” Senske technician Aaron Noack said.So now there are more of them out there and with the nights getting colder our homes are all the more tempting to the eight legged critters.“They've adapted to living with us so they're going to move into structures when the weather gets cold, the weather gets hot, the weather gets rainy,” Senske supervisor Craig Pearsall said. The unwanted guests typically stay at ground level or in basements...because they aren't good at climbing.“You’re vulnerable when you’re down in their territory, they usually hang out in those quiet little corners,” Craig said.Although only 50-percent of bites have venom in them the bites that do typically blister after about a day and then break open.“You can get a really bad staph infection from it,” Judith said.Senske Pest Control recommends regular exterior spraying to keep Hobos out. If they do get inside Judith Feeley says sticky traps are the answer.“One lady brought one in the other day that had 20 of them on it,” she said.As if to make matters worse it’s also mating season for Hobos so they're particularly active. Pest control companies recommend making sure your screens are on tight around windows, clean up your window wells and keep your doors shut.Sacred Heart Medical Center hasn’t seen an increase in people coming in with spider bites but Group Health Clinics reports they’ve seen more people starting to come in complaining of bites.
