A giant new sports complex opens this weekend in North Spokane, the size and scope of which is unlike anything Spokane’s ever seen before.

The new Dwight Merkel Sports Complex is adjacent to Joe Albi Stadium and is a sports site like no other in the city.

The sports complex boasts five softball and baseball fields and eight soccer fields. Two of those soccer fields have artificial turf and lights and can double as football, lacrosse and rugby fields.

There’s also a splash pad, a park a BMX track and a skate park.

The grand opening of the Merkel Complex isn't until Saturday but already the skate park is full or people doing all sorts of things most of us won't even attempt, the Seattle Sounders are hosting a soccer camp and Monday night a national championship softball tournament will take the field.

“Spokane is a sports city and the fact that we have never had something like this, this level of quality, it’s something we were missing,” Adriano Eva with the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department said.

The complex cost $11 Million, the majority of which was paid for by a sports bond approved by voters in 2007.

“It’s gonna be great to look at the fields and see kids all over, its gonna be wonderful,” Adriana said.

The grand opening at the Merkel Sports Complex is Saturday at 10 a.m. They'll have food, music and all sorts of sports demonstrations during the grand opening ceremonies.
