SPOKANE -- Spokane Serial Killer Robert Yates, the man who claimed more than a dozen lives during the 1990s, will be the subject of an hour-long profile on Investigation Discovery next Monday.Yates will be profiled during the upcoming episode of Unusual Suspects titled “Monster in Spokane.” The episode, which will air on July 19, will focus on the efforts of the Spokane Serial Killer Task Force, a multi-agency team of detectives, to find the person responsible for the slayings of more than a dozen people.Robert Yates, an Army National Guard helicopter pilot with near 20 years of service, was arrested in April of 2000 after detectives found a button and blood that was positively linked to victim Jennifer Joseph inside a Chevy Corvette once owned by Yates.Yates later agreed to a plea deal in Spokane County that spared him the death penalty. In return for getting the death penalty taken off the table he agreed to plead guilty to 13 murders including 10 in Spokane County, one in Skagit County from 1988 and the murder of two people in Walla Walla County in 1975.While he avoided the death penalty in Spokane County, he wasn’t so lucky in Pierce County, where prosecutors there charged him with aggravated murder for the killings of two women in the Tacoma area. A jury later found Yates guilty on both counts and sentenced him to death.Yates is currently on Death Row at the Walla Walla State Penitentiary.Among those that will be part of the episode are retired Spokane County Sheriff detectives Rick Grabenstein and Fred Ruetsch retired SCSO Captain Doug Silver, Lynn Everson with the Spokane Regional Health District and Spokane Police Detective John Miller. The episode “Monster in Spokane” airs Monday July 19 at 10 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery.
