COEUR D'ALENE -- Looking for cheap deals on property a large crowd showed up to the Coeur d'Alene Resort Friday for a public real estate auction. With no minimum bids required both the curious and serious hoped to walk away with North Idaho steals including lots at the luxurious Gozzer Ranch Golf and Lake Club.In all there were 18 bank-owned properties up for grabs. The most expensive property was selling at $546,000 and the lowest was just $15,750. If your bid wins you write a check and be prepared to close escrow within 30 days.
It's gambling that both buyers and auctioneer Kent Corbett of Corbett Bottles Real Estate Auction are willing to take.“There’s risk there but it's a double edged sword the more risk you take, the more buyers are going to come knowing its going to sell regardless of price,” Corbett said.Sitting patiently in the crowd was Chris Hood who for over a year now has been eyeing 10 acres of lake frontage near Bonners Ferry.“It’s good for canoeing and hiking around and boating. It's a quiet lake and everything it's nice," Hood said.Terrence Degrood also showed up with a friend and his realtor to look into bidding on four parcels of land in Athol. He'd like to build a shop for his toys.“I came out here looking to see if I could buy a piece of raw land so I could build a shop on it,” he said.Bidding got competitive over six empty lots at Gozzer Ranch and Lake Club in Harrison. Before the real estate market tanked, the multi-million dollar development was attracting the likes of George Clooney and Lance Armstrong. Back then lots were being offered for more than $800,000. On Friday one of those same lots sold for $60,000.While some walked away empty handed, Hood got a lucky $63,000 dollar break on his outdoor oasis.“It seemed like it was a bank repo or something. It seemed like it was over $120,000 at the time. I got it for half of that,” Hood said.Of the 18 properties up for grabs Friday all but one were sold. Corbett Bottles Real Estate Auctions has tentatively scheduled another live auction in Coeur d'Alene around mid-July.
