Letter carriers across the country, including right here in Spokane, are working hard to stamp out hunger.

On Saturday, U.S. Postal Service carrier Dave Lantz walked through Browne's Addition delivering mail and collecting non-perishable donations for the 18th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive.

"You try to balance the bags on your arms or in your satchel," said Lantz.

The NALC food drive is considered the largest annual one-day food drive in the world.

Letter carriers and volunteers in Spokane expect to collect 150,000 pounds of food, all of which will go to Second Harvest of the Inland Northwest.

Kathleen Hedgcock, director of fund-raising for Second Harvest, said the non-profit needs the help more than ever.

"It's the one thing that really stabilizes households that are suffering from some other struggles," said Hedgcock. "If you can get those three meals on the table in the day, then you can take those other steps you need to be more self sufficient."

Last year 2.8 million pounds of food was collected in Washington and North Idaho during the one day food drive.
