Wildlife officials capture husky in North Idaho woods

For nearly half a year, a Siberian Husky eluded capture in the woods of North Idaho. The dog, now named Caprice, was recently lured into captivity by Idaho Fish and Game agents. KXLY4's Tania Dall has more.

With all the wildlife in the area, veterinarians and staff were shocked to learn the dog had survived it's time in the wilderness.

"Coyote, wolves, bears, moose, probably a lot of moose and deer. It's amazing that she's still here today," said Ryan Thrailkill with the Panhandle Animal Hospital.

The dog's amazing tale of survival began nearly 200 miles away in Montana. Last June, a puppy mill bust in Kalispell uncovered 25 Siberian Huskies living in a camper, hungry, and covered in fecal matter.

A good samaritan decided to drive some of the huskies, including Caprice, to Washington where they could be adopted. The problem is she made a break for it near Hope, Idaho.

"About six months ago, we got a call from a couple of people who noticed a dog left by a camper in one of the national forests in the area," said Thrailkill.

For months Caprice avoided capture, being fed by a family living nearby, but keeping a safe distance up until a week ago.

Deputies with Idaho Fish and Game were finally able to coax the dog out of the woods and into good hands.

Caprice is described as timid, unsure of new faces, and a little shaky. But the Panhandle Animal Shelter expects the husky to be placed in a loving home sometime soon.

"We'll get her use to people, get her rehabilitated, and put her up for adoption," added Thrailkill.

The shelter's priority is to get the animal comfortable and socialized before the dog can be placed in a good home.
