A Spokane father has been arrested for abusing his infant daughter ever since she was born just two months ago, leaving with her with a broken leg and a fractured skull.

Last Friday the baby's mother noticed her child couldn't move her leg and cried whenever she touched it. The mom brought the baby to the emergency room at Sacred Heart Medical Center and it was there at the hospital that the mother found out her daughter had been getting abused since she was born.

Doctors say the baby has a broken leg, fractured skull and other injuries that are already in the process of healing up.

Sacred Heart staff called Spokane Police to report their findings and they in turn interviewed the baby’s biological father, Daniel O’Brien, who admitted he had thrown, squeezed and hit the child.

On Monday O’Brien appeared in court charged with 1st Degree Assault of a Child. O’Brien explained that he was stressed out about quitting his job and felt like he was mentally ill.

Police wish he had taken out his frustrations on something else.

“You can't take that out on a helpless two-month-old child who has no way to defend themselves, it's absolutely wrong and you can't do it,” Spokane Police Officer Jennifer Deruwe said.

The child’s mother told police that O’Brien had choked her four weeks ago after he quit his job but didn't have any idea the child was being hurt as well.

The baby is expected to survive her injuries while her dad is being held in the Spokane County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
