'Thrift Store Queen' looks great for less

Some people are turned off by the idea of shopping at a second hand store but one local woman says it not only saves her tons of cash, she says it's fun.

You can assume that if you buy something used or second hand, that it's going to be less expensive. What many people don't know though is that thrift stores offer up price cuts on top of their already low prices.

Thrift Store Queen Tricia Scott's entire closet is full of stuff she got at thrift stores.

Her motto is simple: "Spend ten bucks and look like a million bucks."

For those who think thrift stores are full of junk and say they can't find the goods Tricia says, “Come on with me, I’ll show you.”

She's shown her three trendy daughters - Sophie, Chloe and Brenna - how to shop the racks at second hand stores and they’re not embarrassed by it.

"It's still like getting new clothes because you're still going shopping. You're still trying it on, seeing what looks good on you," 16-year-old Chloe Yaeger said.

"Who doesn't want to save money? It's not embarrassing to save money," 19-year-old Sophie Yaeger added.

And in these times Tricia says saving is a necessity.

“It’s like my little secret, and with the economy the way it is now, I don't want to keep it my secret. I want to tell everybody that this is the way to shop,” Tricia said.

So this thrift store queen was put to a challenge: Dress herself and her three daughters for less than $100 at Value Village.

Her first stop for savings is a 20-percent discount coupon in exchange for a bag of donated clothes. Then she and her daughters hit the aisles, with the girls heading for the shoe department.

“I think most my shoes are all from Value Village,” Chloe said.

But mom says there are things to keep in mind when buying shoes second hand.

“If they're really worn, the other person has their own imprint in them and it's not going to be comfortable for you,” Tricia said.

Another way to save: Check out the color of the price tags. Most thrift stores offer 50-percent off certain colored tags every day.

If you’re looking for something specific Tricia says head to a different department. That sweater you're looking for might be hidden in the men's section. She also says shop the thrift stores if you're going on vacation. They have seasonal gear in stock year round.

"There's so many good deals, you'll find so much there you can just go crazy,” Tricia said.

It doesn't take long for Tricia and her daughters to fill up their cart as they hit the dressing room with some good looking clothes for some bargain prices.

Tricia's purse cost $7, her coat $3. A shirt she picks up for $5 while her jeans cost $15.

Sophie picks up a suit for $7 and a shirt for $5.

Brenna is decked out in a tank top and cover up that cost $15, jeans that cost $7 and a pair of matching shoes for $10.

Finally Chloe's got a scarf that cost $5, her shirt cost $8, her jeans were $10 and the killer shoes she got set her back just $5.

So Tricia was more than able to get new outfits for her and her daughters for less than $100. In fact she got outfits for the four of them for just $82.94

Tricia says the best bargain she ever got was a set of Hermes scarves. The box of three cost her $5. She says when she got home she searched the scarves online and found out each one is worth hundreds.

The most important part to shopping at thrift stores is that you must be patient. Sometimes you've got to be willing to sift through all of the items before you find your diamond in the rough.
