SPOKANE -- Saturday was the one year anniversary of the death of Spokane Community College teacher and coach Erik Anderson. Even though a year has past, hundreds of people came together in the Spokane Valley to run and keep his legacy alive.
With a mix of runners and walkers on the starting line for the Erik Anderson Memorial 4k Community Run, Anderson's wife Mariza fire the starting gun.
Hundreds of runners began their stride, running to honor their friend, coach, and teacher.
"I think the last time I saw all these people was a the memorial last year," said Mariza.
The 38-year-old Anderson died while he was trying to un-jam a bowling machine at the college.
Saturday was a time for people to show their support for a man who people call inspirational.
"It's just amazing all that happens in a year and how much support is still here," Mariza said.
Mariza and her two small daughters think about Erik everyday. Coming together with other people who loved him helps them fondly look back and remember their hero.
"Even though he is not here, his presence is still felt," said Mariza.
And for Erik, well most of the runners think he'd like Saturday's turn out.
"I think Erik would be smiling right now, a big smile on his face," said runner Brian Anderson.
From the $15.00 entry fee, to other donations, all the money raised at Saturday's run went to the Erik Anderson Memorial Fund.
