SPOKANE -- A Spokane jury is now considering a verdict in a sex abuse case involving a former Spokane man who claims he was molested by a priest at the Morning Star Boy's Ranch in the late 80's.
blog comments powered by DisqusBoth sides gave closing arguments Tuesday, with attorneys for the ranch saying all claims of sexual abuse are bogus while the alleged victims’ attorney, Dan Fusy, told the jury that his client – Kenneth Putnam – will always carry the invisible scars he suffered from the abuse.Putnam alleges the former director of the ranch, Father Joseph Weitensteiner, molested him during a boating trip in the late 80's when Putnam was 13. Fusy told the jury during his closing argument that managers at the ranch turned a blind eye to the abuse, that Putnam’s case wasn’t an isolated incident, and alleged the ranch was run by pedophile priests who used it as a McDonalds drive thru.“Father Joe Weitensteiner was allowed to take Kenny away from the premises and treat him as a sexual object for his personal gratification on a number of occasions. This was the system Kenny Putnam was placed in. There was no oversight, none,” Fusy said.Morning Star attorney Jim King says a boy who was with Putnam and Father Weitensteiner for the whole time on the boat trip says there was no indication of abuse. Defense attorneys say Putnam’s allegations of abuse have been fabricated for the sake of making money in the civil lawsuit.“Have you thought how easy it is to make an accusation after passage of time by somebody … and have you thought how little cost there is for Mr. Putnam to make the allegation,” King said Tuesday.Regardless of the outcome of the case Father Weitensteiner’s attorney says his client’s reputation is forever tarnished. The jury received the case early Tuesday afternoon and retired for deliberations at 2:30. Because it’s a civil suit a verdict doesn't require a unanimous vote. This is the first of 19 different lawsuits filed against the ranch by separate men all claiming abuse.
