Police are looking for an assault suspect after a teen female jogging through Riverfront Park was attacked by a man near the clock tower.

Spokane Police say the incident happened around 7:15 a.m. The teen, a high school athlete that trains in the park before class, had stopped for a moment when the attack happened.

“She was coming through here by herself, stopped to tie her shoe, adjust some type of equipment, he snuck up behind her and grabbed her. She very courageously fought him off,” Spokane Police Officer Tim Moses said.

As the teen was defending herself she screamed, attracting the attention of a Gonzaga University employee also walking through the park.

“He saw the fight going on, approached, apparently this assailant saw him coming and took off northbound,” Officer Moses said.

“Luckily, she is not harmed, she was a very brave and courageous little girl to take this guy on and thankfully someone did intervene and help her out a little bit. She just needs to be safe with her friends, carry some pepper spray, carry some keys to gouge their eyes out with any thing you want, just distract them enough to getaway,” he added.

The suspect is described as a white man between the ages of 20 and 25, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 170 pounds. He has blond hair, a goatee, and was wearing a blue or purple hooded sweatshirt with white lettering on it.

Anyone with information about the attack or the suspect is encouraged to call Crime Check at 456-2233.
