Idaho's 2011 budget forecast may hold deeper K-12 cuts

Posted: 4:43 am PST February 5,2010

Lawmakers cautioned public schools chief Tom Luna his plan to absorb a $135 million loss under the governor's proposed budget for the next fiscal year may have to cover an additional shortfall.

Luna reported Thursday to the Senate and House education committees, where Sen. John Goedde pointed out that lawmakers have recommended a budget package that's about $60 million less than the one favored by Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter for 2011.

The Coeur d'Alene Republican chairs the Senate Education Committee and warned that if the Economic Outlook and Revenue Assessment Committee's recommendation plays out, public schools could have to handle an additional $30 million loss.

Luna's proposed budget would save $83.5 million next year, mostly by tapping state endowment fund reserves. More cuts, if necessary, would be covered with an across-the-board 3.74 percent reduction in several areas, including salaries.

Luna says that percentage could be increased if the proposed budget for next year falls short.
