LEWISTON, ID -- The Orofino School District has decided to close Orofino Junior High in an attempt to reduce operating costs and deal with a shrinking budget. The school in north-central Idaho was built in 1910 and is in need of costly repairs.Superintendent Dale Durkee told the Lewiston Tribune that shrinking enrollment factored into the decision. The district had more than 2,800 students in 1970 but now has about 1,100. Students between seventh and 12th grades will now all attend class at the local high school, while younger students will stay in local elementary schools. The district has also decided to keep open two one-room elementary schools in Peck and Cavendish, at least for now. There are 16 students enrolled at Cavendish Elementary School and 19 students at Peck.
