One wounded, one in custody after carjacking attempt

SPOKANE -- A driver has been shot and wounded in an attempted carjacking at Buckeye and Division while the gunman was found a little over an hour later hiding inside a dog house.An eyewitness to the carjacking says that a white Mitsubishi GT was stopped at the eastbound light at Division and Buckeye when a man got in the vehicle from the passenger side.The driver attempted to get out at which point eyewitnesses heard a 'pop' and then saw the driver lying in the roadway.
blog comments powered by DisqusThe suspect then tried to start the vehicle, was unable to and then fled on foot.First responders did CPR on the driver and then transported him by ambulance to a hospital. The driver is reportedly in critical condition, according to police spokesperson Jennifer DeRuwe.Garfield Elementary, located at 222 West Knox Avenue six blocks south of Buckeye and Division, was placed in lockdown according to district spokesperson Terren Roloff. Around 4 p.m. the lockdown was lifted and students were allowed to leave the school.Meanwhile officers, including a K-9 team, began tracking the suspect and found him hiding in a dog house at a home in the 2500 block of North Normandie. Eyewitnesses were escorted to the home to verify the identity of the person in custody and a short time later a detective confirmed the man in custody was the suspect.Early Friday evening authorities confirmed the suspect, 30-year-old Joseph Ellery, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a charge of 1st Degree Assault. Police found a gun behind the Party Palace, less than a block south of where the attempted carjacking and shooting happened.
