Fear of divorce may have been what prompted a Mead man to stab his wife to death in their home last Wednesday.

Jeffrey Canino, 46, made his first court appearance on a 1 st Degree Murder charge related to the stabbing death of his wife Michelle. Investigators say he stabbed his wife Michelle to death and then stabbed himself.

Canino was taken straight from the hospital, where he had been treated for self-inflicted stab wounds to his neck, to the Spokane County Jail, where he was charged with murdering his wife. In court Monday he gave the judge at his first court appearance brief yes or no answers to each question, showing no emotion even as the judge imposed a No Contact order forbidding him from having contact with his 11-year-old son, a material witness in the case.

Court documents however uncover the first tangible clues as to what happened at the Canino home last week.

Those documents say that the Canino’s son told investigators he was sitting in the Chevy Blazer waiting for his mother to take him to an appointment. He went inside to get her and saw his mother lying on the kitchen floor bleeding. Court documents say his mother told him to call 9-1-1 telling him she way dying and that his father had stabbed her.

The son asked his father why he has stabbed his mother and he said "because his mother was going to get a divorce" then he heard his father say "it's my turn." Jeffrey Canino then started to stab himself in the neck while his son tried to stop him.

There were two 9-1-1 calls made from the home that morning. On the 9-1-1 tape of the first call 11 year old boy is heard yelling, “Dad you're killing her … No please stop … I don't want you guys to fight like this … no please stop." Shortly afterward that first call to 9-1-1 ended.

In the second 9-1-1 call Michelle Canino told the operator her husband stabbed her, later during that same call, the son was heard yelling "Mom I am helping you" followed shortly thereafter by "Dad just hand over the knife."

The son, who is now staying with family members, told investigators his dad was depressed about losing his job at Camp Chevrolet but managers at Camp said Monday that Canino was a valued employee and his job was never in danger.

He’s currently being held in the Spokane County Jail on $2.5 Million bail.
