No parent ever wants to bury a child, but for many families it's a heartbreaking reality. One Spokane woman is trying to ease that heartache by paying for funeral expenses.

At Jamie Kelp's house there is a special angel on her Christmas tree for an angel now in heaven. 12 years ago, Jamie's husband lost his son, Kyle. The death was devastating.

"He had a wonderful smile, just gorgeous, just a gorgeous little boy," said Jamie. "No one is ever prepared for the death of a child."

And even though he's been gone for more than a decade, Jamie says Kyle is still a large part of their family.

"My children all live their life daily knowing they have a brother in heaven," she said. "So Kyle is very much apart of our life."

And now thanks to Jamie, Kyle will be apart of so many other lives.

"The death of a baby is like a stone cast into the stillness of a quiet pool, the centric ripples of despair sweep out in all directions affecting many many people," Jamie said, reading a quote that is now the FOUNDATION FOR her NON-PROFIT organization, SMILE AGAIN.

Kelp started Smile Again in October to help families who have lost a child pay for funeral expenses. On Thursday Jamie got her first request.

"I was told to contact you today in regards to my granddaughter's recent passing," Jamie read the letter.

On Monday, one-year old Malia McIver died from a rare metabolic disorder. On Thursday, Smile Again donated $500 for Malia's casket and another $450 for flowers at Malia's service.

"It was tears all the way around... I cried reading the e-mail," Jamie said.

Jamie isn't looking forward to the next e-mail or call, but she knows its coming.

"We're saddened, our heart is heavy every time we even think about the possibility of that phone ringing and it being a family that has lost a child," she said.

Jamie says she finds comfort knowing she can give families hope and knowing Kyle's memory will never fade.

"He's probably greeting his new little friend, he's absolutely the reason this foundation started," Jamie said.
