LIBERTY LAKE -- Spokane County is looking for options and locations to build a new jail and among the options is one that’s turning some heads.
blog comments powered by DisqusThe county has narrowed the list of new jail locations to 10. They include building on the current site in downtown Spokane as well as a site near the Spokane International Airport. The one option that’s turning heads is Liberty Lake, a jail location that could serve both Spokane and Kootenai County. It’s an idea that county commissioners on both sides of the state line may be getting more serious about in the next month or so. Both counties need more room for inmates a shared jail would also mean sharing the expense.Spokane County Commissioner Mark Richard says the jail is in crisis mode. With the county's lease with Geiger Corrections Center up in 2013 Richard says they are going to need somewhere to put hundreds of inmates. The county has narrowed down a list of ten possible sites and the land at the corner of Appleway and Simpson in Liberty Lake ranks eighth on that list. Richard says choosing a site will be difficult.“We are going to our best to educate the public and do our up most best this facility is within a reasonable budget, cutting edge and its secure,” Commissioner Richard said.Richard says commissioners will decide on a site by March. Once that is done the bond to pay for the jail will most likely go before voters in August or November. The price tag for a new jail will depend on the site, and is expecting it will cost anywhere from $220 to $250 Million to build.
