OLYMPIA -- Now that the suspected Lakewood Police killer is dead and off the streets of Seattle, Governor Chris Gregoire wants the citizens of Washington State to turn their attention to supporting the families of the slain officers. The Governor issued the following statement:“I am thankful the suspect in this horrible crime is no longer a threat to our community. I hope this provides some closure for the families and colleagues of our fallen officers. I appreciate the tireless effort of law enforcement from across the state in the search for the suspect. Tragedies like this highlight the tremendous unity of our law enforcement community. We should now focus our attention on providing comfort and support to those who have lost a loved one.”Maurice Clemmons, 37, was shot and killed early Tuesday morning by a Seattle Police officer who was on a routine patrol in South Seattle.Clemmons failed to follow the officer’s instructions and was shot and killed at the scene. Police later found a gun on Clemmons that belonged to one of the four Lakewood officers he is suspected of killing. The officer who shot Clemmons is a seven-year veteran of the force and is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
