Spokane Valley Police involved in shooting

Spokane Valley Police officers were forced to shoot a man following an altercation in the Spokane Valley late Saturday night, Spokane Police investigators say.

The shooting happened just after 10:00 p.m. at an apartment complex located at 8910 East Broadway near Argonne. Spokane Police, who are the lead investigators in the shooting due to the involvement of Spokane Valley officers, say two Spokane Valley Police officers responded to a report of a man and a woman arguing inside an apartment.

Investigators say when the officers arrived at the apartment, a 65-year-old man confronted them with a handgun. That's when police fired at least eight shots at the man.

"I just heard 'boom, boom, boom,' and I came downstairs and asked my boyfriend what was going on and if he heard it, and he opened up the door, heard them say 'get on the ground', and then shut the door and locked it," said a neighbor.

Police say the man was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries due to multiple gunshot wounds. Spokane Police Investigators spent Saturday night and most of Sunday morning at the apartment trying to piece together what happened.

As part of standard protocol, police will not release the names of the officers who shot the man until 72 hours after the incident. Spokane Police say the officers who shot the man have been placed on paid leave.

This is the second officer involved shooting in Spokane Valley in less than a month. In October, two officers shot a confrontational and suicidal man outside a home on East Third Avenue.
