Two injured in separate car versus pedestrian collisions

Spokane Police say two women were injured in two separate car versus pedestrian collisions Friday night across Spokane.

The first crash happened at about 10:30 Friday evening in the intersection of Browne and Spokane Falls Boulevard. Police say an SUV hit a woman crossing Browne, backed up and then drove around her.

Police say the woman was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

They didn't get very far. Witnesses in a nearby car followed the SUV to an alley on Riverside. That's where the Spokane County Sheriff's helicopter, Air 1 took over.

Using infrared technology, pilots spotted the suspects hiding under a tree. A few second later, one of the suspects climbed over a barbed-wire fence, injuring his leg in the process.

Police arrested 29 year-old Cameron Olsness near Sprague and Hatch. His passenger stayed near the tree until two officers reached her.

Officers said the people who witnessed the crash were instrumental to Olsness' arrest.

"They gave us a description, told us exactly where the vehicle was, we got the suspects right in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle which always helps out," said Officer Ron Vantassel with the Spokane Police Department.

Olsness is charged with vehicular assault and felony hit and run.

At about the same time as the other crash, Police say a woman was tossed about 10 to 15 feet when she was hit by a car while trying to cross Division near the intersection of Lacrosse.

Officers say the woman hit the median in her car and stopped, her vehicle coming to rest straddling the barrier separating the northbound and southbound lanes of Division between Lacrosse and Walton.

Police say the woman got out of her car and then tried to cross Division when another vehicle hit her, tossing her about 10 to 15 feet in the air.

Police say the woman was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Division was blocked for a short time while police investigated the collision. The driver that hit the woman has not yet been charged.
