Witnesses recall deadly accident in Sandpoint

A man crossing the busy intersection at Ceder and Fifth in downtown Sandpoint was killed late Thursday afternoon when a man driving a truck didn't see him in the crosswalk.

“The gentleman that hit him was stabilizing his head and kept telling him 'You're going to be okay, you're going to be okay,'” witness Sherri Voight said. “There was a lady with 911 on the phone screaming, 'You hit him, you hit him,' and he said 'I couldn't see him, I couldn't see him, it's so black out here, I couldn't see him.'”

Idaho State Police say the driver of the Ford F-250 stopped at the intersection late Thursday afternoon, then turned south and hit 46 year-old Anthony Joerger. Witnesses say he was thrown at least 15 feet.

“He (the driver) was pretty shaken up,” witness Less Newman said. “All shaking and worried about what was happening.”

The intersection isn't pedestrian or traffic friendly according to those who know it well.

“I hate it,” Newman said. “Part of it you can turn on a red light, part of it you've got to turn on a green light.”

Voight says it's a difficult situation for everyone.

“The streets are dark, the gentleman was wearing all black, it was tragic on both ends,” she said.

Joerger was taken to Bonner General Hospital where he died from his injuries. Joerger's family would like the driver of the truck to know that they don't blame him for the accident.
