SPOKANE VALLEY -- It's bad enough to have someone break into your car and steal your belongings. It's even worse when what they take steals your ability to get around.Michael Sharp, 63, feels trapped in his own home after his wheelchair was stolen from the back of his truck parked in his own driveway Wednesday.
blog comments powered by Disqus“I had 23 surgeries before I lost both my legs,” Sharp said. “I went two-and-a-half years in the hospital and one of those times I had to lay in a bed for a month, almost six weeks. That's what this feels like.”Sharp spent Wednesday morning at church and got home around noon. He went inside his home and worked on projects and forgot that his wheelchair was still in the back of his truck. When he remembered to get his wheelchair, it was gone.“Probably some kids decided they wanted to play with it, took it out of the back of the truck and played with it and just left it,” he said. “It's a $2,000 vehicle that I absolutely have to have.”Sharp says he doesn't have the $2,000 to replace it and his insurance won't cover it. His chair was custom built and it would take at least six weeks to order a new one.Sharp filed a police report, canvassed the neighborhood and even posted fliers at local businesses pleading for its return with no questions asked.“It's the only thing I got,” he said. “Other people in wheelchairs know what I'm talking about.”If you know anything about Michael's stolen wheelchair, call Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
