SPOKANE -- It is likely you will be captured by 30 cameras in a normal day in downtown Spokane, and luckily for police one of those cameras caught a woman in the act of abusing her young child Wednesday. On Friday, an anonymous Crimestoppers tip helped bring that person to justice.
blog comments powered by DisqusShortly after 4 p.m. that anonymous tip led Officers Wayne Downing and Shaney Redmon on a search of several addresses around Spokane including an apartment in the 1400 block of North Lincoln. It was there, at the last address on their list, they located the woman police feel is responsible for the abuse of the young child caught on surveillance videos at the STA Bus Plaza on Wednesday.Keyana Key, 28, was being hidden in the apartment along with her three young children by her older sister, 39-year0old Aletha Robinson.Key was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Second Degree Assault of a Child while her sister was booked into the jail for Second Degree Rendering Criminal Assistance. The three-year-old boy who was seen being abused in the surveillance video at the STA Plaza was lethargic when officers arrived and was taken to a hospital for tests to determine if he had any injuries. The other two children were placed in the care of Child Protective Services.Witnesses who saw the incident firsthand on Wednesday said that seeing the assault incident at the bus plaza Wednesday was far worse and more violent than could be depicted on the surveillance video. Key had gotten off a bus and began yelling at her young boy to hurry up. When he didn't move as fast as she expected, Key drug him down the sidewalk by his coat before she snapped and let the boy go, leaving him to fall face first into the pavement. The Spokane Police Department is crediting the assistance of the community who provided the tips that helped locate Key and her children quickly.
