MOSCOW, ID -- It's called Steakhouse Hill for a reason.

A stretch of U.S. Highway 95 on Moscow Mountain is a frequent crossing zone for moose, and that's resulted in numerous motorist injuries and animal fatalities.

The Lewiston Tribune reports the Idaho Transportation Department tried installing moose-crossing signs, but officials say they seemed to be popular with students at the nearby University of Idaho and they kept getting stolen.

Now the department is installing a laser and light system -- lights flash when deer, elk, moose or other animals pass through laser beams focused along shoulders of the highway.

ITD Engineer Joe Schacher says the system will give travelers an extra chance to avoid a collision.
