Driver rams SUV through jail's inmate intake area

Spokane County Sheriff's deputies are trying to determine exactly what caused someone to ram their car through the inmate intake gates at the Spokane County Jail.

Just before noon on Sunday, both Spokane police and Spokane County Sheriff deputies responded to the Spokane County Jail on reports that a vehicle had crashed through it's sally port doors.

Deputies noticed that a black Lincoln Navigator SUV drove up on a sidewalk and around a secure gate before slamming through the sally port's roll-up door, crashing into a wall just feet away from the jail's booking area.

The passenger front quarter panel of the Navigator was heavily damaged in the crash. The sally port door was nearly folded in half.

Deputies immediately arrested the driver of the SUV, 31-year-old Dustin Leeds. Deputies were in the process of investigating a stolen vehicle report by Leeds' mother when they heard about crash at the jail.

Nobody was hurt during the crash, but Jail officials put the entire jail into lockdown as a security precaution.

Leeds is charged with car theft, first degree malicious mischief, and reckless endangerment. The damage to the jail is estimated to be about $14,000.

Police say Leeds' family says he has mental issues and that he has threatened to crash his car into the jail before. According to police, Leeds' mother plans to file charges of vehicle theft against her son.
