TEKOA, Wash. -- A Tekoa teen who died earlier this week in a car crash was honored during the Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia Nighthawks' last football game Friday night.Zachary Smith, 17, died Tuesday night when his SUV rolled. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Zach was class president and co-captain of the Tekoa-Oaksdale-Rosalia football team."We're a family, this football team is, and we lost a family member," Head Coach Ken Lindgren said. "We miss him and we're going to play as hard as we can for him."Zach's family is thankful for the nearly 18 years they had together."I know that every foot step, every move we make, every play that occurs, he's going to be right with us, stride-for-stride, neck-and-neck," Zach's best friend Zach St. John said.Three days after Zach's death, his parents attended the final home game of the year for his football team Friday night. The loss is still fresh, but they say they would not want to be anywhere but the game that he should be playing in."The fact that they put his number and initials on the field, I just can't tell you how meaningful it is. I wouldn't have missed it for the world," Zach's mother, Liz Smith said.
