SPOKANE -- Police think they have arrested the man who is behind a rash of ATM thefts in the Spokane area with the damning evidence against him nothing more than a beanie cap. It's been a tough week for George Butrick. First he was arrested at a pawn shop with a stolen gun and now he's been implicated in a series of thefts involving ATM machines at local convenience stores. When he was arrested on October 30th police say Butrick was carrying around a stolen gun but they also found heroin on him which is not only illegal but is a very expensive habit to support. A heroin addiction could cost a person up to $600 a day to support. In October there were at least eight attempts to steal cash machines from convenience stores and other Spokane businesses.“They take their stolen car, smash out the window at a gas station or convenience store that has an ATM in the front window hook up a chain or strap drag it off,” Spokane Police spokesperson Jennifer DeRuwe said.
When someone broke into a Conoco gas station at the intersection of Green and Mission on October 21st a burglar alarm scared the burglar off but not before a surveillance camera snapped a photo. After the image appeared on the news someone recognized the suspect.“With citizen tips they were able to put a name to a face. One of our detectives contacted and arrested him, coincidentally he had a stolen handgun and some dope on him he was arrested and booked into jail,” Officer DeRuwe said. However when confronted with the surveillance video Butrick denied being at the store and told investigators he never wore a beanie cap. Unfortunately, one look at Butrick's MySpace page and it showed a picture of him wearing, of all things, a beanie cap.Butrick is suspected in that one attempted burglary of the Conoco station but detectives are now working to connect him to up to several other ATM break-ins. Police say they have one pretty significant piece of circumstantial evidence against Butrick: Since his arrest last Friday there has not been a single ATM break-in.
