OKANOGAN, WA -- The Okanogan County Sheriff has confirmed that the man involved in a standoff with deputies just outside of Okanogan city limits most of the morning has been found dead inside his garage.Sheriff Frank Rogers confirmed that the man, Nicholas J. Ray, 40, of Okanogan, was found in his garage with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.Authorities received a phone call at about 4 a.m. Tuesday from the 40-year-old man’s wife. When police officers arrived at the home just outside the Okanogan city limits the woman and her children climbed from a window to safety. The man then ran from the home and barricaded himself inside a garage with a .22 caliber pistol. When the SWAT team tried to move in on the garage at about 7 a.m. they spotted a flashlight, but not the man. They heard what they thought was a gunshot around 7:10 a.m. but weren't sure if that was the case. At 11:30, they sent in a remote-controlled robot and couldn't see Ray but they saw a stack of mattresses inside the garage. The SWAT team entered the garage and found Ray dead under the mattresses.Sheriff Rogers said that Ray had no prior criminal history and added the couple was having some domestic problems.
