BONNERS FERRY, IDAHO -- Friends and family of fallen soldier Sergeant Joshua Kirk gathered to mourn his death and to pay their respects one final time Friday in Bonners Ferry.Sgt. Kirk was killed Oct. 3rd when insurgents attacked his outpost near the Pakistani border.“I just could not imagine anything happening to him,” Joshua’s sister, Liz Fulton said. “When I was told Josh had died, my heart fell to the floor.”Boy Scouts and Patriot Guard members lined the streets of Sgt. Kirk’s hometown -- Bonners Ferry. He eventually moved away from northern Idaho, married and had a child. The one constant in his life is that he always wanted to be a soldier his family says. This was Kirk’s second tour-of-duty; he had already served one 15-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.“When Josh re-enlisted I thought, why?” Liz said. “But, I was confident he would be fine.”

Kirk accomplished in his life and misses him very much.“Growing up Josh was the big brother I was always looked up to,” Liz said. “I will never forget him. I will hold the memories of him in my heart.”Sgt. Kirk was also a great soldier, according to a letter written to his family from a fellow soldier.“When things go bad, it’s men like Sgt. Kirk that lead, and sometimes we lose them as a result,” the letter said.“A lot of people have brothers, I had a great brother,” Josiah Kirk said.Kirk was buried 10 days ago in Exeter, N.H., which is where his wife’s family is from.
