Rescue crews find missing hunter in Coeur d'Alene National Forest

Posted: 11:15 am PDT October 19,2009

Kootenai County Sheriff's Deputies say they've located a man feared missing following a weekend hunting trip in the Coeur d'Alene National Forest.

Deputies say a helicopter crew located 29-year-old John King Sunday morning while searching for him near the Laverne Creek Drainage. King went hunting with a friend on Saturday, the friend told deputies he last talked to the 29-year-old at about 6:00 p.m. on Saturday via a two-way radio. King was reported missing to authorities around 9:15 Saturday night.

Deputies from Shoshone County assisted Kootenai deputies with the search. Rangers from the U.S. Forest Service and a helicopter crew from Fairchild Air Force Base also assisted in the search for King. Deputies say friends and family spent Saturday evening searching the many roads and trails in the area.

The friend told deputies that King had the radio, a GPS, and a hunting rifle with him when he started out on Saturday, but no food or water. Kootenai County Sheriff Sgt. Tom Knight said King had been located just before 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Sgt. Knight could not comment on King's condition, but said he was being taken to Kootenai Medical Center to be evaluated.
