The mayor of a Rhode Island city where the schools superintendent ended father-daughter dances and mother-son ballgames to comply with state law is calling the move an attack on time-honored traditions.

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung says he's "utterly disappointed" the Cranston schools superintendent ended the gender-based events after the state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union complained about them last spring.

Schools Superintendent Judith Lundsten told school organizations in an August letter that district attorneys found that while federal gender discrimination laws exempt such events, Rhode Island law does not.

Meanwhile, a school committee member said Tuesday the committee will consider asking for a change to the state law that would allow the events.

Do you agree with the ban or do you think it's over the top?
