Sound Off for September 18th: Judge denies Karl Thompson's request for a new trial. What are your thoughts?
Former Spokane Police officer, Karl Thompson, will not be getting a new trial. Judge Fred Van Sickle made that decision today.
It's been 9 months since Thompson was convicted of abusing Otto Zehm's civil rights. He still hasn't been sentenced and has been out of jail during the appeal process since he wasn't considered a flight risk.
Thompson's attorneys had claimed misconduct by both the prosecution and the jury, but Judge Van Sickle didn't agree and denied the motion for a new trial.
Otto Zehm was killed in 2006 following a confrontation at a North Spokane Zip Trip. Thompson was convicted of using excessive force and violating Zehm's civil rights.
At this point, a sentencing date has not been released.
What are your thoughts on today's decision?
