Working 4 you: Summer produce for a thinner waist

SPOKANE, Wash. - Saturday marks the first day of Summer, and for many people it's a time to try and lose some extra weight.

But if you want a lower waist line, think about heading to the produce aisle.

Fruits and vegetables are a great way to shed a few pounds, and the variety doesn't get much better than this time of year.

According to dieticians, summer is the perfect time for fruits and vegetables, and they have many benefits that most people don't know about.

If you're feeling hungry, registered dietician Marisa Moore suggest reaching for some berries. Berries are high in fiber and will help keep you feeling full throughout the day. But, they're also a great source for water.

Also full of water is honeydew melons, cantaloup and watermelon, making them a great snack choice.

And if you're looking for something low-calorie, think about having a bowl of cherries.

"For every cup of cherries, it's about 100 calories and three grams of fiber. That's the perfect pool-side snack," said Moore.

And when it comes to vegetables, Moore recommends eating lots of tomatoes, peppers and green beans. She says not only are they good for your waist line, but they also taste the best in the summer.

Experts recommend two cups of fruit and 2.5 cups vegetables each day. But experts say most Americans don't eat anywhere close to that amount.
