There are so many factors that go into great movie villains. Perhaps it is their speech, their actions, or their generally sinister intent.
After all, an evil villain often needs a devious strategy so that the hero of the film can do their best to thwart that plan.
Of course, it may just be the outfit, because there can't be a truly evil villain without the proper wardrobe.
When all these factors are combined, some characters stand out as being downright nasty. For whatever reasons, there are some villains that the audience almost ends up rooting for, and there are others that cause people to shiver and cringe.
With that in mind, here are a few of the most evil movie villains of all time ...
No. 5: The Wicked Witch of the West
This character's name is a good start. After all, she is "wicked," and she doesn't show much sign of cracking throughout the classic film, "The Wizard of Oz."
The Witch may not be all that frightening by today's standards, but back in the day she was quite terrifying to the youngsters. She had the green skin, the black attire, the pointy hat, and the broom.
The Wicked Witch set the standard for the look and behavior of all witches who came after her. In addition, she could always send out her dreaded flying monkeys.
To top it all off, she had the signature cackle, which put an emphasis on her evil nature. The Wicked Witch was evil personified, but there was another villain who truly embodies the dark side ...
No. 4: Darth Vader
The "Star Wars" films have plenty of "good" guys, but there is no franchise without Darth Vader.
From the beginning of the series, it is clear to audiences that people should not mess with this angry persona. If someone upset Darth Vader, he could simply hold up his hand and his victim starts choking to death. Or he could break out the Lightsaber, and things can really get ugly.
What really cements Vader's evil nature is his presence. Throughout the films, characters literally cower when Darth appears.
In addition, he is scarier when he talks in a calm tone. Anyone can yell, but Vader seems more ominous when he speaks in a quiet, controlled voice. That is when people know they are really in trouble.
Of course, people also know they are in trouble when they are being chased by a guy in a hockey mask ...
No. 3: Jason Voorhees
When people think of evil movie villains, it isn't hard to come up with this guy. He has a last name, but in popular culture, most people know him simply as "Jason."
His signature hockey mask and machete have become part of movie lore. After 12 films, Jason is still "alive" and killing people, and he doesn't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down.
Jason has died and been resurrected a number of time, but his black heart keeps right on ticking. The complex "Friday the 13th" storyline has included trips to Manhattan, Hell, and outer space. Jason has even shared the screen with fellow horror film villain Freddy Krueger.
The longevity of Jason suggests that evil is difficult to completely remove and that there will always be a villain.
Now, some villains like to put their victims through elaborate tests and games ...
