Spokane Police arrested a 25-year-old mother in west
Spokane Saturday afternoon after witnesses said she

Shortly after 2:30 pm police responded to a welfare
check in the 2400 block of W. Mission. The caller
said he had been working on a house when Destiny Ahenakew
and her 1-year-old son came inside and asked for a
glass of water. He contacted police, concerned they
had nowhere to go.
Right after he called the man says Ahenakew threw
her child up into the air and over a fence. The child
fell about 50 feet down the steep embankment on the
other side before hitting a tree. Another witness
at the scene was able to scale the fence and bring
the child back to safety.
When officers arrived on scene they called for medics
for the child, who suffered non-life threatening injuries.
He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
We spoke with one woman off-camera who caught the
tail-end of the incident. She told KXLY4 that the
25-year-old seemed very calm while being put in handcuffs
and showed no signs of intoxication.
For the most part, residents in the area can't believe
that something like this would happen, not only in
their neighborhood, but just in general.
"I don't know her, I don't know her situation, but
somehow she needs help because that's certainly not
an appropriate way to handle an issue," Lou Dobberstein
Ahenakew was arrested and booked into Spokane County
Jail for Assault of a Child in the 1st Degree. In
the state of Washington, that is a Class A Felony
which means should could see a max penalty of life
in prison. She will likely make her first court appearance
